Lighting Designer Boerne

In Boerne and across the Texas Hill Country, the work of M. W. Moss is defined by a quiet precision—an approach to lighting design that considers illumination as an essential architectural element rather than an applied layer. Each project is developed through a careful study of space, material, and atmosphere, where light is used to reveal structure, enhance texture, and shape experience.

Working independently of manufacturers, Moss brings a disciplined, design-driven perspective to every project, allowing lighting solutions to be selected solely for their appropriateness and performance within the architecture. The result is a body of work that is restrained, intentional, and highly tailored—where lighting supports both the function and the deeper character of a space.

“Lighting should feel integral to architecture—never applied, always considered.”

The Designer

Mike Moss is an award-winning architectural lighting designer and recipient of the 2018 IES Illumination Award of Merit. Based in Boerne and serving the Texas Hill Country, he brings over two decades of experience creating lighting strategies where illumination enhances both the function and character of a space. Each project is approached with a focus on architectural integration, materiality, and atmosphere, ensuring that every lighting solution is thoughtfully tailored rather than dictated by product lines.

As the founder of M Moss Design, Moss develops lighting strategies that are rooted in architecture, material, and spatial experience. His work spans residential, commercial, and creative projects throughout Boerne, San Antonio, and the Texas Hill Country, where he collaborates with architects, interior designers, and builders to deliver thoughtful, highly tailored lighting solutions.

His background includes extensive experience in lighting plans, dimensional visualization, energy-conscious design, and code compliance—combined with a refined understanding of how layered illumination can shape atmosphere, improve efficiency, and elevate the overall experience of a space. Each project is approached with careful attention to detail and a commitment to achieving a balance between technical precision and artistic intent.

Originally trained as an artist, Moss studied fine art, studio practice, and painting at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. His early work explored light, composition, and material—principles that continue to inform his approach to architectural lighting design. This foundation allows him to approach illumination not only as a technical system, but as a creative medium capable of shaping perception and experience.

From custom residences to complex architectural environments, Moss is known for developing lighting solutions that are both restrained and expressive. His work reflects a consistent focus on quality, clarity of vision, and the long-term success of each project. By maintaining an independent, design-first practice, he ensures that every lighting solution is selected for its appropriateness to the space—resulting in environments that feel cohesive, intentional, and enduring.

“True success comes from collaboration, innovation, and designs that create lasting impact—both for spaces and the people who inhabit them.”
